The parents of an Iraq War veteran, Lance Pilgrim, recently settled a wrongful death suit with the Waco VA medical center due to the mistreatment of PTSD, according to an article on KWTX.com.
Randy and Judy Pilgrim were seeking damages worth over $75,000 from the Waco VA medical center and the U.S. Government due to Lance's death, which happened in August of 2007. Lance was an Army veteran and served in Iraq. When he returned to the U.S., he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which he turned to the VA for help.
According to the lawsuit, Lance was suffering from "severe depression," drug addiction, and was suicidal. The suit further alleged the medical personnel working at the Waco VA medical center were fully aware of just how severe Lance's problems were, and there was a standing order to not prescribe him hydrocodone.
Against that order, however, Lance was given hydrocodone on August 14, 2007, and was then "prematurely released" from the medical center. The suit alleged the release was premature because Lance's depression treatment and prescription were never stabilized.
On August 18, 2007 Lance died due to an overdose of hydrocodone and methadone. Randy and Judy were able to show Lance's death was the directly related to the negligence of the VA and the U.S. government.
