At this time next summer, Jacksonville will have a new
Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical center capable of serving approximately 35,000 veterans every year. The push for the new clinic has been an ongoing one, but the groundbreaking for the facility finally happened, which will help
veterans disability issues in the area.
The center will span 133,500 square feet, is being built at a cost of $35 million, and construction began in June. The new clinic is being built within sight of the VA's current medical clinic, but is 2.5 times as large as the existing facility, and will staff 424 positions, which is double the number of the existing clinic's staff.
The new facility's services, which will be offered free-of-charge, will include:
- nursing;
- surgical;
- psychiatric;
- dental; and
- medical.
According to VA Sec. Eric Shinseki, the
new clinic will be capable of providing "90% of a veteran's daily care." Further, the facility will become part of the VA's growing telemedicine network, which will allow the clinic to connect to experts located at larger facilities.
There are more than 250,000 soldiers and veterans in Duval County.
With the growing number of physical and mental health issues plaguing today's returning veterans, this clinic could not have been built at a better time.
