January is Cervical Health Awareness Month, a designation created by Congress to encourage people, particularly women, to understand the symptoms and causes of this potentially fatal disease.

According to DrugWatch.com, cervical cancer usually affects both the cervix and the bottom edge of the uterus. Risk factors associated with cervical cancer include: 

• Human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted virus
• Prolonged use of the contraceptive pill
