John Cochran VA Has More Contamination Problems

February 15, 2011 - The John Cochran Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospital in St. Louis is back in the news. This hospital was previously in the news last summer, when they were forced to warn over 1,800 veterans they may have been exposed to HIV due to faulty sterilization procedures. Specifically, those veterans were exposed to inappropriately cleaned dental equipment.

The problem now is far removed from being a sterilization issue. The John Cochran VA hospital has suspended all surgeries indefinitely. The culprit was surgical tools that appeared to be dirty. As a result, the hospital was forced to reschedule 35 surgeries. The VA is working with all the veterans affected by the rescheduling by arranging alternate care when possible.

The complaint about the unsanitary conditions triggered an inspection of all the other surgical materials in the hospital. The VA was also forced to test every piece of equipment even remotely related to surgery. This current incident was triggered by spots on surgical tools on their way into surgery.

As well as the current contamination concern, hundreds of other complaints have been lodged against the Cochran VA, all of which are being investigated. There is no estimate of how many veterans could have been affected this time. Nor has a time been established for when surgeries will resume. What is certain is veterans demand and deserve better care and hopefully the VA will take the steps necessary to ensure the Cochran VA starts adhering to patient safety policies.
