Keeping Your Lawyer Informed Can Help Win SSA Case

You probably know by now that updating the SSA of any changes, such as a recent move, can help you stay on track to get the benefits you deserve. However, making sure that your lawyer is always informed of your case is important, as well.

A good lawyer will keep you updated on anything happening during your quest to get disability or SSI benefits. Extending the same courtesy to him or her is crucial. You would be surprised by how many people simply forget to alert their lawyer of an address change or correspondence from the SSA received in the mail.

In general, some of the most important factors to keep your lawyer updated about include the following:

  • A change of phone number
  • A change of address
  • A change in your medical condition
  • Any recent notices from the SSA regarding your case

In general, anything that could hurt or help your case needs to be reported as soon as possible to your lawyer. Contact information also needs to stay updated so that your lawyer can reach you immediately, as many forms or questions from the SSA often have strict deadlines by which you must respond.

Frequent medical exams and hearings are not unheard of during the application period. Missing any of them and not immediately telling your lawyer could put you out of the running for disability or SSI benefits. Additionally, any of these appointments could come up suddenly, in which case your lawyer will have to contact you quickly to ensure that you will be there.

You expect both your lawyer and the SSA to tell you as soon as possible about any news regarding your case. Not only is giving them the same consideration polite, but doing so could help your case tremendously, while neglecting to do so could eliminate your chances of getting any money for your disability.

If you or your loved one are suffering from a severe physical or mental disability, you should contact a Social Security Disability lawyer immediately to learn about your rights and determine eligibility. The process of securing Social Security Disability Insurance benefits and/or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) can be difficult and overwhelming. Don't go it alone!
