Know What the SSA Considers Blind Before You Apply for Disability

Clearly, most cases decided by the SSA regarding Social Security disability benefits are judged on several points. It is not usually a subjective process unless there is some mitigating circumstance. Applicants who claim to be blind are required to prove their disability just like anyone else is. However, the process may be a little different since there are some specific rules.

Aside from not being able to work because of the lack of vision, you must also meet the following requirements:

  • You must fit the medical description of blindness
  • It must not be caused by any felony activities
  • You must have been blind for at least the last year

Of course, the SSA has specific numbers relating to blindness. You must be no more than 20/200 in your best eye. These strict rules might seem lofty, but the good news is that you should have an idea of whether you qualify before you even apply. Just be aware that even if you meet all these requirements, you should have a doctor validate these claims with an official note in your medical records.

If you either find that you do not qualify for blindness according to the SSA, or believe you do but are denied, you can certainly appeal. If you decide to do so, you would likely go before a judge with the proper documents to prove that you cannot work due to your blindness.

Just to make sure you are not wasting your time, you should contact a lawyer first to ensure that you have a chance. These are good guidelines to follow before you apply, but you will likely need professional advice to win your case. Your lawyer should let you know what documents or corroborating materials you will need to have the best chance at a claim acceptance.

If you or your loved one are suffering from a severe physical or mental disability, you should contact a Social Security Disability lawyer immediately to learn about your rights and determine eligibility.
