Krabbe Disease Is On the SSA’s Compassionate Allowances List

More than 50 medical conditions appear on the list of Compassionate Allowances provided by the Social Security Administration for consideration of disability benefits. The SSA routinely adds new conditions to the list, which originally consisted of 38 conditions, including Krabbe disease.

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, Krabbe disease is a degenerative disorder that affects both the central and peripheral nervous systems. Krabbe disease most often affects infants younger than 6 months old, though some people will not experience the disease until adulthood. There is currently no cure for this disease.  

The most common symptoms of Krabbe Disease are fever, stiffness of the limbs, irritability, vomiting, seizures, difficulty feeding, muscle weakness, and slower development of motor and mental skills. Deafness or blindness may eventually result.

This condition is typically fatal to victims younger than 2 years old, though early treatment using stem cells from umbilical cord blood has been shown to be somewhat effective in battling the disease. Adults who get Krabbe disease later in life usually have the least severe cases. Most adults with Krabbe disease are unable to work and therefore, qualify for Social Security disability benefits.
