Many people who get disability or Supplemental Security Income also qualify for Medicare. With the recent news that there will be no cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, for 2010, many Social Security recipients are worried. Not only can many people barely pay their bills right now, but some living expenses have also increased.
The recent focus in the news is the healthcare bill, but many do not know much about one major source of care: Medicare. The part of the program that offers coverage for visits to the doctor, called Medicare Plan B, will fit within fewer patients' budgets next year. The premiums will increase slightly, likely by $10 to $20, but combined with the lack of COLA, it is enough each month to bar some people from getting the healthcare they need.
Fortunately, most people who use Medicare will not have to pay for the increases, as a hold-harmless clause protects their pocketbook from premium increases during years that have no COLA. However, about a quarter of patients will be affected.
A current House bill proposes the elimination of premium increases for Medicare Part B. If it does not pass, several people could be negatively affected. Not only will millions of Social Security recipients have to pay more next year while receiving less money, but so will both high-income retirees and those new to Medicare Part B next year.
Additionally, since many low-income retirees are on both Medicare and the state-funded Medicaid, all states will spend more money trying to pay the higher premiums. Clearly, the issue affects everyone, whether you use Medicare or simply pay taxes. While the healthcare bill takes up a large part of the media, it is only right that everyone be made aware of the related issue of increasing Medicare premiums since it affects even the wealthiest tax payer.
