There are endless horror stories of how Vietnam veterans were treated when they returned to this country from their deployments. Soldiers were even told not to put on their uniforms outside their posts to avoid horrible treatment from protesters. According to an article on Ocala.com, a Florida senator now seeks to ensure the service of Vietnam veterans is always remembered and celebrated.
Senator Charlie Dean (R.-Fla) introduced a bill that, if passed, would create a “nationwide observance for the end of the Vietnam War.” The observance would essentially celebrate the sacrifices and the service of all Vietnam War veterans. Sen. Dean is asking Congress to create a “commemorative medal” that would in turn be available to Vietnam veterans.
March 30, 2013 marks the 40th anniversary of the last troops leaving Vietnam, and is the day by which Sen. Dean is pushing Congress to act on this legislation. Should this bill pass, it will bring about “long-overdue [positive] recognition,” according to Sen. Dean.
Many Vietnam veterans suffered multiple traumas during their service, including during their cycle back into the United States following their tours. There is growing support for the bill among members of congress, and similar bills have been proposed in the past. On the other hand, others believe this bill is not worth passing.
