Life For Cancer Patients After Treating for Head and Neck Cancer

If you have been diagnosed with a condition that prevents you from working and functioning on a normal basis, Social Security disability benefits may be available to you. The application process can be complicated and while many applicants are denied, with the help of an attorney you stand a better chance at being approved the first time around.

According to a new study, researchers find that most patients' speech and swallowing are not negatively affected after undergoing treatment for head and neck cancer.

Treatment that consists of both chemotherapy and radiation can be difficult on the body, however, the majority of patients recover well in the areas of being able to talk and swallow afterwards.

The risk factors that were found to increase the chances of difficulty with speaking and swallowing were older patients and those who had problems with swallowing prior to treatment.

In addition, if the patient's tumor was in the larynx or hypopharynx they were more likely to experience troubles, or if the patient underwent neck dissection where the lymph nodes and tissue surrounding them were removed.

These encouraging findings were published in the December 2010 journal Archives of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery.

The diagnosis of cancer or any other debilitating condition may lead an individual to seek Social Security disability benefits. Consulting with a Social Security disability attorney should be your next step in order to determine eligibility.

When you are interviewing Social Security Disability attorneys ask critical questions, like: how many Social Security Disability hearings do you have per month; do you understand the SSA's POMS (the manual Social Security employees use to process claims); and, do you understand the date last insured and how it affects my disability onset date?
