Based on a report from
Health Finder,
the life span for individuals suffering from hypertension could be increased by treating high blood pressure. When a heart condition has caused you to be unable to work for several months, you may be eligible to receive
long-term disability benefits.A new study suggests that when high blood pressure is controlled, it could actually add years to an individual’s life. Specifically, it was found that
those who were taking blood pressure medication for more than 4 years reduced their risk of death over a 20-year period.
While the treatment of blood pressure can reduce the chance of a severe cardiovascular event, this is the
first time that researchers have been able to show that it could also prolong someone’s life. The earlier treatment begins, the better the outcome.
The study found that
for every month of treatment, an extra day of life was given to the patient. This is in addition to reducing the risk of death.
Researchers do indicate that this
study was done on individuals over a 3- to 5-year period. Life expectancy beyond that wasn’t studied.
