Low Risk Breast Cancer Patients May Only Need Mammogram Every 3 Years

Health News reports that according to a new study, women at low risk for breast cancer may only need a mammogram every 3 years. Eligibility for Social Security disability benefits will depend on whether or not your medical condition falls under one of Social Security Administration's listing of impairments.

Current screening guidelines recommend mammograms every 2 years for those who are between the ages of 50 and 74; however, there could be a significant cost savings if those women who are at a decreased risk waited 3 or even 4 years. Researchers believe that rather than basing recommendations on age, it could factor in other important issues.

Women with low risk would be considered to have less dense breast tissue, no previous biopsy alerting to a potential tumor, and no family history of breast cancer.

Researchers also say that women in their 40's could be checked for breast tissue density when they have their first mammogram, which would indicate the necessity of getting screened every 2 years or further in between.
