Maine Man and Woman Accused of Medicare Fraud

Many people who commit fraud against the SSA typically start off receiving Social Security disability benefits that they actually deserve. However, they usually end up neglecting to update their file when they get a job, whether purposely or mistakenly. Such people often collect money for years from the SSA through disability payments.

Some people do not stop at taking disability money. Instead, they also prey on other programs, such as Supplemental Security Income and Medicare. According to Maine Public Broadcasting Network, a local man and woman defrauded Medicare, and attempted to qualify for programs like food stamps and SSI by making false statements.

A 74-year-old Maine man reported to Medicare officials that a 58-year-old woman was caring for his health at his home. MaineCare typically reimburses people with disabilities when they receive healthcare, so the program officials acted accordingly and sent out checks. Unfortunately, it was soon found that the health services the man was receiving were not necessary.

The plot allowed the two to receive about $61,000 from Medicare. Both were indicted on several counts, a few of which could result in up to ten years of imprisonment.

The fact that these two attempted to supply other programs with false statements in order to qualify shows that this was not a mistake. The man essentially received free medical care that he did not necessarily need, and the woman was paid with funds that should not have been afforded to either of them. There is no telling how much money each of them kept before they the scheme was discovered.

Programs like Medicare have specific standards that recipients must meet before getting coverage. Rather than risking providing false information to officials, talk to a lawyer to make sure you qualify before you apply. This can also help ensure that your statements are as accurate as possible before your application is sent in. A lawyer can also help you find out what treatments are available for reimbursement for you, if any.

If you or your loved one are suffering from a severe physical or mental disability, you should contact a Social Security Disability lawyer immediately to learn about your rights and determine eligibility.
