Man shot self to claim disability benefits

When I read the story of John "Richard" Lynn who shot himself in the chest so that he could claim disability benefits, I was outraged!  As if the country's Social Security disability backlog wasn't bad enough now truly disabled individuals literally dying to secure their benefits must worry about malingers further clogging the system.

Lynn, 52, told police officers that two people stole his wallet and money while putting a gun to his head.  He claimed that he managed to knock the gun away from his head and as a result, was shot in the chest.  Thankfully, justice prevailed and Lynn was arrested on Monday, September 8th, 2008.  He was charged with filing a false police report, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and violating probation.

Was this man so down on his luck that shooting himself was his only option to survive financially?

What do you think about Lynn's actions?
