A Seattle-area man has been charged with first-degree theft after spending years living off of
Social Security disability benefits that he was siphoning from someone whom he purported to be friends with.
According to
Seattlepi.com, the accused was stealing the disability benefits of a 58-year-old mentally disabled victim. The scam began in April 2007, when the accused appeared at the victim's disability hearing, representing himself as the man's caregiver, and asking that a
disability check be delivered to his own post office box.
The victim agreed to allow the accused to deposit a disability check of more than $63,000-an amount which represented back-pay for the disabled man-into his own bank account, so long as the disabled man was given money once per month and any other time he needed it. In April of 2007, bank records show that $57, 838 was deposited into the accused's account, while only $1,000 went into the disabled man's account.
By January 2009, only about $5,000 had been deposited into the victim's account. Friends and neighbors say that the disabled man has suffered greatly without his benefits. He suffers from
depression, severe
anxiety, brain damage, and dementia.
Arraignment has been set for April 8.
