Managing Funds While Awaiting Your Disability Decision

If you are applying for Social Security disability, you probably already have little money. You might be out of a job, which is partly why many more people have applied in the last few years. In fact, you may have been unable to work a fulltime job for years. Consider some ways to stay afloat while you wait for a decision from the SSA.

In a perfect world you could apply for disability while still working. That way you could have some income as you await the decision. Unfortunately it is not possible to approach the waiting period this way. Instead, you will have to get creative with managing your money. Consider the following tips to make it through the wait financially:

·        Try to save up as much money as possible before you quit your job

·        Restructure your budget, eliminating any costs you can do without temporarily

·        Accept the kindness of local charities, such as food banks

·        Look for programs that assist low-income individuals and those that qualify for disability in order to get help paying for utilities

You will find that some local assistance requires proof that you already receive disability benefits, but in some cases, you can show that you have applied and have little to no income. This way, you can at least get help with bills like electricity, phone, and even free entrance to nearby attractions, such as parks.

You will likely learn quickly how to make do with very little. It might not be easy, and you will probably have to rely on the kindness of charities and family. However, you will know how to live on a small budget, meaning that you can possibly manage your budget quite well once you start receiving your monthly payments from the SSA.

Also remember that you may be entitled to back payments, which can help you pay off any debt accrued during the waiting period. If you have any questions about your case or local programs available to you, contact your lawyer.

If you or your loved one are suffering from a severe physical or mental disability, you should contact a Social Security Disability lawyer immediately to learn about your rights and determine eligibility.
