Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), like those commonly used in the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, are responsible for causing much of the traumatic brain injury (TBI) injuries in today's soldiers, and as a result thousands upon thousands of veterans disability claims.
By definition, IEDs are improvised, which implies a somewhat "makeshift" assembly process. A weapon like that is expected to be made on the spot, or very close to where it is being used as instability becomes a factor. According to an article in USA Today, however, the majority of IEDs are made from an ingredient produced in Pakistan, and then shipped to Afghanistan.
U.S. troops discovered or were injured by more than 5,000 IEDs between June and August of this year. That is the most IEDs ever discovered over any 3-month period since the first day of the war in 2001. According to the Department of Defense (DoD), those IEDs were responsible for taking 63 American soldiers' lives and wounding 1,234 other soldiers.
The vast majority of IEDs consist of homemade explosives. One of the main ingredients is regionally produced in Pakistan. Regardless of how many check points the U.S. military establishes, the supply is still going to get into Afghanistan, and into the bomb making factories to be used against U.S. troops.
