April 8, 2010 - The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 is providing an influx of federal money to the Martinsburg VA Medical Center (MVAMC). The money will be used to upgrade and improve the MVAMC's entire infrastructure.
The first and foremost goal of making the enhancements is to offer veterans a much better experience relying on the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for their primary source of health care. The MVAMC plans on using the funds to work towards being more environmentally conscious, they also look forward to being able to create new jobs at the facility.
There are 12 projects planned for the MVAMC. The first project will bring the ventilation systems up to the VA's standards. Replacement of the systems will cost $2.8 million and construction is expected to begin soon.
The second project will install groundwater monitoring wells to bring the MVAMC up to the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection standards. Approximately $2.5 million will be spent to handle the availability and proper processing of groundwater.
A third project will replace the MVAMC's outmoded utility systems. The $3.3 million for this project will be used to focus on energy conservation. This is going to be accomplished by weather proofing older facilities in order to make them more energy efficient and at the same time decrease the amount of money and energy required for annual usage.
The rest of the projects all focus on either repairing or replacing a litany of out-of-date equipment and antiquated systems. The VA is committed to protecting the environment and this commitment is being fulfilled at the MVAMC. In 2010 construction will be completed on the MVAMC's E-85 fueling station, which uses alternative fuels.
The VA has a very dedicated goal in attempting to "go green." The facilities are being upgraded to help the veterans more than anything else. Being able to become environmentally conscious at the same time is a well planned bonus.
