McGuire VA Hospital is Quiet Yet Enormously Effective

July 16, 2010 - On any given day, up to 5,000 people will enter and exit the McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond, Va. The Hunter Holmes McGuire Affairs Medical Center is part of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) network of hospitals and has been in operation since 1943. Today it covers 120 acres, offers services ranging from simple health care needs to state-of-the-art advanced medical procedures, and serves over 200,000 veterans. McGuire's expansive list of services also includes:

  • Dental care;
  • Outpatient medical services;
  • Substance abuse problems;
  • A community live center (nursing home); and
  • A palliative care unit.

The McGuire VA Medical Center is at the forefront of such fields as cardiac surgery, including heart transplants, and spinal cord injury research. McGuire is 1 of only 4 polytrauma rehabilitation centers in the United States. While most VA hospitals treat only veterans, McGuire also serves active duty personnel because of their advanced polytrauma unit specializing in brain injuries and rehabilitation.

McGuire houses the largest spinal cord injury program in the entire VA medical system. This unit provides 80 acute-care beds as well as 20 lodger beds. Further, they offer extensive inpatient treatment and rehabilitation services. Beyond this, the unit is involved in "cutting-edge research" as far as finding new and improved ways to assist patients. The doctors and staff in this unit make it a nation's leader in spinal cord injuries.

Beyond the hospital's state-of-the-art medical procedures, McGuire offers a community living center. This center makes people feel at home as much as possible while living in the VA. 10 years ago this center would have been called a nursing home.

One thing McGuire's staff celebrates is the camaraderie within the institution. This perspective helps the entire medical center run as a cohesive team and permeates every aspect of the hospital, making it the leader in health care it is.
