Alzheimer's can quickly progress to a point of disability, which may lead an individual to file for Social Security disability benefits, particularly if they are not yet of retirement age.
In a report from
CNN Health,
a new study shows that many individuals with early-onset Alzheimer's are not being diagnosed because of missed symptoms. Memory loss, while most commonly associated with Alzheimer's, is not the only sign.
Those with early-onset Alzheimer's are also found to have other symptoms such as impairments with language, vision and behavior. These missed symptoms could lead to a patient being given the wrong diagnosis or none at all.
Researchers suggest that there should be other ways of determining the onset of Alzheimer's besides symptoms. Biomarkers, obtained through PET scans or cerebrospinal fluid could indicate the possibility of Alzheimer's.
Not all patients with early-onset Alzheimer's have problems with memory, therefore, the disease could progress without a diagnosis, preventing early treatment. While no cure is available, there may be other options that could potentially slow the disease.
