Miami VA Staff Facing Recommended Disciplinary Measures

Potentially thousands of veterans were exposed to multiple infectious diseases and were put in a position possibly mandating a claim for veterans disability compensation. Those veterans were patients at the Miami, Florida Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center and underwent colonoscopies performed with unsanitary and improperly cleaned equipment.

Once the sterilization problem was discovered, the VA notified more than 2,500 of their potential exposure. They failed, however, to notify every veteran facing the potential risk. Specifically, there were 79 veterans who were not given notice for a full year after the Miami VA became aware of the problem.

The VA considered that a "lack of oversight," and has recommended the VA's hospital director and ex-Chief of Staff be disciplined,
according to an article in The Miami Herald. Although their exposure to the "improperly cleaned equipment" cannot positively be identified as the source of infection, 5 veterans have tested positive for HIV, 8 positive for Hepatitis C, and 1 for Hepatitis B.

It is unknown if the VA's recommended discipline has been, or will be, implemented. Because of the Miami VA's inactions, those 79 veterans spent 16 months without knowledge of their risk of exposure, and without being tested for illness.
