The Pentagon is reporting that
more than 30 percent of drone pilots are experiencing symptoms of burnout and mental distress. Approximately 1,000 Air Force pilots fly remotely piloted aircraft, known as drones, which fly in Iraq and other areas. These planes are in the air for more than 24 hours a day so long shifts are required to operate these specialized weapons.
There are many reasons cited for causing the emotional distress of these service members. These pilots are
performing very monotonous activities for long hours, performing detailed surveillance on persons in question.
Later, they may have to kill their subjects with the drones. This is in addition to balancing a war mentality with family life. The very nature of being involved in warfare in any capacity is also considered a stressor for most service members.
This combination of factors is causing many soldiers to struggle with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and general mental burnout.
The military offers many counseling programs through the Department of Veterans Affairs and veteran-aid facilities to help treat any
mental health issues soldiers may encounter.
Sometimes the effects of PTSD can be so debilitating that it is difficult to lead a normal life or hold a regular job.
