Military Sexual Abuse Related To Homelessness Among Female Veterans

There have been numerous stories detailing the rise in the numbers of female veterans becoming homeless. Although multiple programs exist to attempt to combat the problem, the number of homeless female veterans seems to be rising. An increasing rate of Military Sexual Assault may be playing a critical part in that rising number.

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), female veterans equaled 7.5% of the approximate 75,000 homeless veterans across the nation between 2008 and 2009. VA numbers also indicated 20% of female veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan suffered sexual abuse while in the military. This trauma has been found to hurt the chances of female veterans smoothly transitioning back to society more than traumas related to combat.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Women Bureau issued a specific guide to service providers in how to handle these traumatized veterans. The guide was designed so as to specifically address the needs and challenges brought up following a military sexual trauma. Many female veterans are not aware of the helpful services available to them.

Homelessness among female veterans is a nationwide problem. Females who have experienced military sexual trauma, however, are becoming homeless at faster rates than female veterans generally. Likely the problem is worse than reported because of the number of female veterans who do not report their attacks.
