Millions of dollars in bonuses for military personnel returning home to Massachusetts after 9/11 has been unclaimed by the veterans according to state officials.
The bonus program went into effect three years ago, and pays $500 - $1,000 to veterans who:
Checks for $1,000 will be issued to veterans who deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, and $500 will be paid to all other Massachusetts veterans who meet the requirements above.
According to an article in the Boston Globe, nearly one third of the 30,000 veterans who qualify for the bonuses have yet to claim their bonus.
Next-of-kin can also apply for the benefit, but they must show documentation establishing a connection to the deceased veteran.
For more information on how to claim a Massachusetts Welcome Home Bonus, contact the Massachusetts Office of the Treasurer, which is the state agency that processes applications for the bonus.
