The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has launched a pilot program in which clinicians have been testing the ability of being able to connect to the existing VA network with Apple iPads. Some of those participating in that pilot program are now testing the iHealth app, which should improve treatment for all veterans with disabilities, as well as those seeking standard health care, according to an article in The Federal Times.
The iHealth app can allow medical clinicians to access patient information "at the point of care" through the VA's entire patient record system. A patient's entire medical history can be accessed from distant and isolated locations, which can be helpful in providing medical care to veterans in more rural locations unable to travel to larger VA medical centers.
In situations where lab results indicate abnormal conditions, and immediate action is required, VA physicians can view that patient's previous treatments and lab results while scheduling care and treatment. It also can be visually helpful for the patient when something isn't fully understood until it's explained with a picture, diagram, graph, etc.
As far as sharing health care data and creating common standards for that shared data, the VA is much farther ahead than the rest of the country, according to Principal Vince Kuraitis, at Better Health Technologies LLC.
