More Studies of Lejeune’s Water Requested

November 30, 2010 - It is no longer a question of "if" Marines and their families were exposed to chemically poisoned water for 30 years at Camp Lejeune. The government, however, has been slow to respond to the accusations and with very few exceptions, has not paid out disability claims. North Carolina's two Senators, Richard Burr R-NC) and Kay Hagan (D-NC), have been very aggressive in attempting to force the government to admit responsibility for their actions, which would hopefully force them to provide treatment for those who have contracted cancer and other diseases as a result of their exposure to the contaminated water at Camp Lejeune.

Although some headway seems to have been made, Sen. Burr is not satisfied. He has outright demanded the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) explain why they have lagged in approving disability claims for Marines exposed to the toxic water during their time at Camp Lejeune.

Over 200 veterans have applied to the VA for disability, but the VA has only linked 20 veterans' illnesses to the contaminated water. Sen. Burr wants to know why, but that is not all he is interested in. He also wants to know why the VA has rejected the claims related to the toxic water. Finally, he would like an answer as to why the VA has seen fit to consolidate the disability claims related to the toxic water in Kentucky.

The two Senators have also forced the Navy to re-examine a study claiming no illnesses could result from exposure to the tainted water. The study itself was significantly flawed as it disregarded the presence of benzene, which is a known carcinogen. The Navy will look at the death rates of those people exposed to the water against those not exposed to the water.

Over 1 million people were likely exposed to the contaminated water. Many of these people have been diagnosed will illnesses that have been positively tied to being caused by chemicals present in the water. Sen. Burr is doing his job: ensuring those exposed to the water are compensated for their developed illnesses by holding the government responsible for their actions.
