More Veterans Being Sexually Assaulted At Veterans Facilities

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) Government Accountability Office's (GAO) recent study, VA medical facilities have been the sites of 100s of sexual assaults. From January 2007 to July 2010, there were almost 300 "alleged, attempted, or confirmed sex assaults."

The study revealed the victims of the assaults were both men and women. The victims and the assaulters were both patients and employees. The investigators found the sexual assaults included everything from inappropriate touching to rape.

The GAO report listed a litany of failings on the VA's watch as causes for the assaults. Those problems included:

  • disorganized security;
  • not enough VA police;
  • no screening process for patients to determine if they are dangerous; and
  • no reporting of crimes up the leadership ladder for corrective action.

A new bill by the House Veterans' Affairs Committee would mandate the VA not only account for the sexual assaults, but take positive steps toward attempting to determine who could be a potential offender.

In 2009 the VA implemented an operations center to help follow crimes within the VA. Ultimately, the goal is to establish VA medical facilities with stronger security and improved reporting systems.

Despite regulations requiring felonies be reported to the GAO, 42 rapes were never reported. The VA's screening process for detecting potential sexual offenders consists of clinicians' assessments, which is based on patients admitting to having a criminal past.

This process results in nothing but a flawed picture of patients' histories. The VA must take action soon to prevent future sexual assaults from occurring.
