The unemployment rate for veterans is above the national unemployment rate. According to a recent report, however,
more veterans worked for the federal government last year than in any previous year. That being said, the vast majority of them worked at the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). By tradition, these agencies are more veteran-friendly than other federal agencies.
The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) report found 542,641 veterans worked for the federal government in 2010, which was 26.3% of the complete workforce. Compared to 2009, there were approximately 30,000 more employed veterans. The DoD was responsible for the majority of that increase as they hired 22,000 more veterans last year than in 2009. Their 2010 workforce consisted of 42% veterans.
The VA hired 4,200 over the previous year, raising the number of the veterans in their workforce to 27%.
Although most other agencies hired more veterans than in previous years, the number of veterans at 9 cabinet-level agencies did not increase. It could be the increase in the number of veterans hired is the result of President Obama's Veterans Employment Initiative. That program mandated federal agencies establish veteran hiring staffs, promote veteran hiring, and give veterans preference in hiring.
