According to a report from CNN Health, early morning smokers have an increased risk of developing head and neck cancers. During treatment for cancer, it may become necessary for an individual to stop working. This could lead to the need for long-term disability benefits.
Cancer, a journal of the American Cancer Society has recently published 2 new studies that indicate those who light up when they wake up, increase their risk of head and neck cancers. It's believed that early morning smokers tend to be more addicted and may have higher amounts of nicotine or other types of tobacco toxins in their bodies.
The studies found that those smoked their first cigarette of the day, between 31 and 60 minutes after awaking, had a 30% increased risk of lung cancer. Those who smoke within 30 minutes of waking up found the risk to increase to almost 80%.
For head and neck cancers, those who smoked between 31 and 60 minutes after waking up had an increased risk 40% and 60% when they smoked within the first 30 minutes of awaking.
Head and neck cancers or any other type of cancer could become debilitating and lead to missed time from work. If this is going to be for an extended period of time, then you may qualify to receive disability benefits. A Fort Lauderdale long-term disability lawyer can determine eligibility.
Long-term disability benefits may be available to those who have purchased a disability plan from a private insurer or have coverage through an employer. Unfortunately, the insurers don't make it easy for the disabled to get access to the benefits they deserve.
