When you are diagnosed with a debilitating medical condition, such as many types of cancer that require extensive treatment and recovery, you may need to take months and months off from work. This may qualify you to receive long-term disability benefits.
According to a report from the Doctor's Lounge, a new study says that an MRI may be able to detect if cancer is cervical or endometrial. This could be a beneficial alternative when a biopsy isn't able to do so.
The study found that out of 48 patients, radiologists were able to identify the type of cancer in 38 cases. This was a 79% success rate, which is hopeful since in about 3% of the cases a biopsy is unable to detect between cervical and endometrial cancer.
According to the U.S. National Cancer Institute every year in the U.S. about 43,000 women are diagnosed with endometrial cancer and about 12,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer.
By knowing the type of cancer, early and appropriate treatment can be given to women. The ability of an MRI to detect the right type of cancer could also potentially mean less patients undergoing unnecessary surgery.
