Health Day reports that compared to mammograms, MRIs are better at detecting breast cancer in high risk women. When you are no longer able to work because of your medical condition, then you could be entitled to Social Security disability benefits.
According to new research, MRIs were found to not only target breast cancer in high risk women but in their study they were also much more cost efficient in comparison to a mammogram; however, this was due to a grant they received which knocked the price of an MRI scan down from $3,500 to $649.
These researchers believe that lowering the cost of MRIs is a key factor in making them useful and beneficial to women. The hope is that if more scans are done, the costs can be lowered.
In their study, which involved nearly 600 women, a mammogram screening detected just 1 case of breast cancer. On the other hand, the MRI scan found 9. Early detection is important when it comes to breast cancer, especially those women who are at high risk.
The results of these findings, however, are considered to be preliminary.
