Nashville Veteran Sues VA for Care Received at Nashville VA Med Center

On March 29, Lloyd Sylvis, a veteran, visited the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital in Nashville to use their outpatient services to get a new pair of glasses. Sylvis is now suing the VA for $4 million because he claims the VA's actions blinded him and caused him brain damage.

Sylvis is "in a near vegetative state" due to an infection brought on by contaminated medicine he was given during an eye exam, according to his claim. Sylvis isn't the only one affected, either; four other patients also received contaminated medicine.

During his visit, Sylvis was given an injection of Avastin. Two days later he awoke blind and in severe pain. Sylvis claims he was diagnosed with bacterial endophthalmitis. Sylvis returned to the VA for follow-up visits due to disorientation, and was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis.

Sylvis' son stated he contacted the media to alert the public to his father's situation and to bring light to how poorly the VA treated his family during the follow-up, and after the damage had already been done. He claims the VA did not work fast enough and the initial infection moved from Sylvis' eye to his brain.

Sylvis' complaint also claims at least one doctor stated the medication became contaminated while it was being mixed inside the hospital pharmacy
. The VA states they have already completed a "thorough analysis" so as to "ensure the safety of the patients [they] treat" but would say no more due to the pending suit.
