National Coalition for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Meeting in DC

May 7, 2010 - The National Coalition for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans (CIAV) is a group of agencies serving only veterans and military personnel that have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.

From May 11-14, 2010 the CIAV will hold a national conference in Washington, D.C. to continue weaving together their national "safety net" used by soldiers, veterans, families, survivors, and dependants. Attending agencies will attempt to learn from one another how they can improve the services they offer the military community. The following groups will be attending the conference:

  • Service providers;
  • Veterans;
  • Families;
  • Survivors; and
  • Advocates.

 The CIAV agencies focus on being as diverse as possible to serve the widest population of military personnel possible. The conference will hopefully allow the agencies to increase their range and proficiency in supporting not only Iraq and Afghanistan veterans but their families for years to come.

More than 50 agencies nationwide make up the CIAV and this conference is being held for a very specific reason. In order to best serve soldiers, veterans, and their families, the CIAV will be attempting to establish working relationships with:

  • The non-profit community;
  • The Department of Defense;
  • The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA); and
  • The Federal Government.

 The CIAV wants to ensure the VA and the military are always providing the best possible care  for veterans and want to work as closely as possible with those two organizations to make that happen. Different organizations will discuss their own experiences but everyone will share the same goal: to provide the best possible care for military personnel, both active duty personnel and veterans.
