National Disability Employment Awareness Month

If you receive disability payments, you might be excited to know that October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Since most people who get disability payments do not work, many wonder how this could be. The answer is that as long as your disability allows you to do so, you could be working.

In most cases, just to get benefits, you have to prove that your disability prohibits you from working at any job. However, if your condition begins to improve, or perhaps you just get used to it, the Social Security Administration encourages you to try to work. Its Ticket to Work program allows you to work part-time at first, and eventually full-time if you can handle it. After a period of time, your benefits will be adjusted or eliminated altogether, once you can afford to support yourself.

If you have worked before, you likely know that being able to pay all your bills with some money left over feels great. For this reason, National Disability Employment Awareness Month is a great motivator, both for employers to hire able workers who have certain conditions and for those currently looking to stop relying on disability checks.

If you are interested in no longer relying on disability payments, you can start seeking jobs of interest to you. As long as you can perform the duties, whether full or part-time, you can give any job a try. If you find something you excel at, you could stand a chance of slowly getting off the disability payroll and onto that of a job you enjoy. Find out more about the Ticket to Work program before informing the SSA of your plans.

If you, or your loved one, are suffering from a severe physical or mental disability, you should contact a Social Security Disability lawyer immediately to learn about your rights and determine eligibility. The process of securing Social Security Disability Insurance benefits and/or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) can be difficult and overwhelming. Don't go it alone!
