National Effort Being Put Forth to Prevent and Treat Alzheimer’s

According to USA Today, a national effort is being put forth to prevent and treat Alzheimer’s. As this condition progresses, it can become disabling which may lead an individual to require Social Security disability benefits.

Officials from the government’s Health and Human Services have convened with medical experts in order to come up with a plan to combat Alzheimer’s. The effort is the “National Alzheimer’s Project Act,” with the goal being to effectively treat and prevent Alzheimer’s by the year 2025.

Of the top disease killers in the U.S, this is the only one that has no cure. Nor does it have any medical options that can slow the progression or prevent it. Government intervention clearly shows the urgency of the matter; however, some experts believe that the targeted year of 2025 should be moved up.

Currently Alzheimer’s affects about 5 million people in the U.S. By the year 2050, with the baby boomer generation growing old, that number is expected to triple. This includes the increasing number of cases known as early-onset Alzheimer’s, which affects an individual before the age of 65.

When Alzheimer’s strikes an individual, it hits the entire family. It’s not just physically and emotionally damaging but it can impact a family’s finances if the individual is no longer able to work.
