Nature Therapy for Veterans in Use at New Virginia Retreat

Retreats have been used for years as part of therapy programs for individuals recovering from physical and mental injuries. Now wounded veterans will have their own personal retreat available to them to work on their own injuries. The Boulder Crest Retreat for Wounded Warriors is a non-profit, eco-friendly retreat for rehabilitation of those on veterans disability and others.

The retreat will utilize alternative therapeutic techniques that have a focus on nature. The belief is approaching therapy in this manner is very calming, which is generally very helpful for veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Further, there is no cost involved in attending the retreat.

One thing veterans will not find at the retreat is doctors forcing them to stay on a regiment of pills. The retreat is located in Bluemont, Virginia, which is about 60 miles outside of Washington, D.C., and is designed to be the type of place to put veterans into a much more peaceful mindset than generally found in medical centers. The retreat also includes places for family members to stay so as to accompany wounded veterans in their time of need.

Hospital environments tend to induce stress, which is counteractive to the healing process. The therapy at the retreat includes alternative therapies, such as horticultural therapy, which has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety in recovering patients.
