Nerve Connections in Patients with Spinal Cord Injuries May Be Regenerated

Spinal cord injuries can leave someone permanently disabled and in need of Social Security disability benefits. However, researchers have discovered that nerve connections in patients with spinal cord injuries may be regenerated.

It doesn't take much in the way of an injury to the spinal cord for a person to end up losing all function below the site of the injury. This can leave someone completely disabled and unable to perform typical daily activities.

Nerve connections control voluntary movement. When a person suffers a spinal cord injury they lose this function. Researchers have discovered a way to delete an enzyme, phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN), that controls a molecular pathway. This molecular pathway helps regulate cell growth.

PTEN inhibits the ability for cells to regenerate. By removing this enzyme, there is an opportunity for nerve regeneration. This is hopeful news considering paralysis or any type of functional loss is generally otherwise untreatable. This new discovery could allow for new therapies to be developed that regenerate these nerve connections.

If you have a spinal cord injury or suffer from any severe mental or physical disability, you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits. Contact a Social Security disability lawyer who can help determine eligibility.
