New Approach To Treating Veterans’ Mental Health Under Development

December 23, 2010 - A federal endowment of $3.67 million spread over 5 years will be used to develop a brand new program to help veterans diagnose and treat mental health issues stemming from their military service. This program is the first of its kind in the U.S. and will attempt to couple both veterans and their families with in-depth counseling unique to the needs of each.

This program was born out of the lack of counseling for the families of veterans suffering from combat-related mental health disorders. Recognizing that families are on the front lines of the veterans' traumas, it was also not hard to see that veterans' families can be a huge positive force in their lives if they knew how to provide the help the veterans need. This program will involve everyone in the healing process as it is a process everyone undergoes together.

The traumatic situations which soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan frequently experience are ripe for potentially causing mental health problems in soldiers. Many times veterans returning home from deployments with mental health issues cause new traumatic environments for their family members with their erratic behavior.

The program serves to change the traditional therapy process. The program's main council will consist of at least 51% veterans, active-duty Reservists, Guard members, and likely the family members of these groups. Instead of therapists telling the veterans and their families what they need, the combat experienced council will work with local counselors to serve the precise needs of both veterans and their families.

Veterans will likely be more apt to work with other soldiers who have been where they are. This not only reduces the stigma of working through a mental health disorder, it will help veterans and families help themselves and each other.
