New Bill Addresses 4 Areas of Veterans Issues, Including Health Care

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) is meeting with support and criticism over his first solo attempt at introducing legislation. His bill focuses on helping veterans in 4 specific issues:

  • unemployment;
  • health Care;
  • homelessness; and
  • returning veterans facing too much bureaucracy.

The bill is very encompassing, which, according to Blumenthal, is absolutely necessary. Based on the amount of homeless veterans and "inadequate health care," Blumenthal stated this country is failing its veterans. Aside from attempting to bring the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) into more modern times, the bill includes 16 distinct requirements that would ease veterans' problems finding employment, counseling, basic shelter, and other available benefits.

One issue the bill would address would be preventing veterans from having to reapply for status with the VA after being discharged
. This is where veterans tend to get lost in the system, which directly affects their benefits. Blumenthal's bill aims to fill in this gap.

Blumenthal defended the broadness of his bill by saying there is no point in attacking one problem when there are multiple, interrelated problems. At the same time, there is no way to do establish everything the bill requires without laying out a sizeable amount of money, which is going to cause waves given the current financial atmosphere.
