New Bill Addresses Contamination At Fort McClellan and Veterans’ Health

Rep. Paul Tonko is concerned for the health of troops who have trained at Fort McClellan, Alabama. Toxic substances have been discovered both on and around the base.

Rep. Tonko recently introduced to the House of Representatives the Fort McClellan Health Registry Act. If it passes, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will be required to look into the health of any soldier who had trained at the former Army base.

Tens of thousands of soldiers served and trained at Fort McClellan between 1935 and 1999. The legislation would also mandate the VA establish a single database consisting of the names of every soldier from Fort McClellan. That database will then be used to ascertain if there is a connection between the soldiers' severe health issues and the toxic chemicals.

Additionally, the bill will call for the VA to administer health exams to every Fort McClellan veteran. Once administered, the VA will provide those veterans with their available options for care based on new research and what consequences, if any, the veterans will face due to exposure to toxic chemicals.

Fort
McClellan has been determined to be a hazardous waste site by the Environmental Protection Agency. The city in which it is located is one of the most polluted areas in the country. The sooner links are established between soldiers' health issues and the toxic waste, the sooner veterans can start filing for their disability compensation.

If you are a disabled veteran who has been denied disability compensation or have not yet applied for benefits from the VA, a South Florida disability attorney from LaVan & Neidenberg is ready to help. To learn if you are entitled to certain programs and benefits
