New Bill Focuses on Therapy Dog Training Program for Disabled Veterans

The Veterans Dog Therapy Training Act was introduced by Michael Grimm (R-NY) and the House recently passed the legislation. For veterans with disabilities, including those with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the bill is considered a huge win.

If passed into law, the bill is able to allow veterans to help themselves through their own PTSD. Veterans with PTSD would be able to train and handle therapy dogs in an effort to work through their PTSD symptoms. Those dogs would then go to veterans with disabilities to be used as aids in their daily lives.

The bill functions to create a pilot program, which can be held in multiple Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers across the country. Disabled veterans, specifically those with PTSD, can learn the ins and outs of how to properly train and handle their therapy pet, and be assessed as to what kind of benefits will emerge.

A big benefit to the program is that it serves as another alternative PTSD treatment. As the suicide rate for veterans continues to climb, with many veterans suffering from PTSD, alternative therapies meet a vital need. The bill advocates using shelter dogs in the program, which, in the end, can benefit both veterans and animals.
