New Bill May Create Easier Access to Basic Records for Veterans

According to an article in The Merced Sun Star, a new bill known as the Efficient Service For Veterans Act (ESVA) can help veterans with disabilities, and those without, get started on processing their claims quicker by producing a copy of their DD-214, which is their service record.

The ESVA would provide a streamlined process for veterans at veteran centers by having the capability of providing such records electronically. Producing a DD-214 is the most efficient way to verify veterans' eligibility for requested services.

Without a DD-214 in hand, veterans have to go through bureaucracy of getting a copy before they can be given help. Veterans' centers could use either the Defense Personnel Records Image Retrieval System (DPRIS) or the VA/DoD Identity Repository (VADIR) so as to be able to view a veterans' DD-214 on a secure site.

However, not all Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) veterans' centers have access to those systems. This bill would ensure they're all granted access, which eliminates any delay in service for those veterans in need, and at the same time does away with any "bureaucratic hurdles" that pop up.

Veterans centers offer a list of vital services, such as counseling for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and readjustment issues; it's critical veterans seeking help don't have waiting periods for that help. Seamless, professional, and excellent health care should be available to every veteran upon request and without delay.

If you are a disabled veteran who has been denied disability compensation or have not yet applied for benefits from the VA, a South Florida disability attorney from LaVan & Neidenberg is ready to help.
