New Bill Plans to Allow Veterans Use Educational Benefits for Startup Businesses

Many of today's veterans would rather spend their time opening their own businesses than going back to school, especially with the contract set-asides available to businesses owned by veterans with disabilities. Recognizing this growing trend, U.S. Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-Neb) introduced a new bill that, if passed, can provide veterans with the option of "trading in" their earned educational benefits for money they can use to start a small business, according to an article in the Omaha World-Herald.

Educational benefits are offered for a single purpose: to help veterans reintegrate into their civilian lives.
This bill keeps in line with that mission by recognizing some veterans are much more productive members of society as business owners than students. In addition to helping veterans reintegrate, the bill may also help local economies by creating jobs and helping "small business entrepreneurs."

On the other hand, some feel that there are a large number of startup businesses that fail, and those owners have nothing to fall back on when that happens. The GI bill is supposed to be able to provide the education that would serve as that safety net.

The cost of the bill cannot yet be determined because there's no way to determine how many soldiers will take advantage of it and launch a veteran-owned business, should it be made available.
