New Director of Fayetteville VA Medical Center Ready to Go

July 23, 2010 - Elizabeth Goolsby is the new director of the Fayetteville Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. One of her first orders of business is to make sure she talks to every person in the Medical Center with a "stake in the operation."

She is not limiting herself to just the staff, however. Instead, she wants to hear from patients and outside community leaders. She wants questions and ideas and anything else she can use to ensure the Fayetteville VA Medical Center (FVAMC) provides the quality health care that is expected. She has stressed the difference between what the FVVAMC was and what is going to be under her leadership.

Goolsby is the 5th director of the FVAMC in 14 years. The history behind the Center involves a myriad of problems ranging from sexual harassment to racial discrimination. These issues, of course, directly translated to poor patient treatment.

Goolsby has already met with the staff and multiple veterans groups so as to develop an early standard of what type of service will be given from here on out. While some changes will become immediately apparent, others will not. It will take some time to replace the image the FVAMC has, which includes that of a hostile and uncaring staff. Goolsby noted one thing in particular - rudeness to patients will no longer be tolerated.

Patients have told Goolsby they are grateful for the care they receive. Patient complaints so far have focused on location, ease of service, and speed of service. These concerns are already being dealt with in multiple ways, to include construction of 4 more clinics as well as moving all out-patient care to a 250,000 ‘"super clinic"' in 2013.

Goolsby jumped at the chance to head up the FVAMC. Goolsby has experience in the VA system and believes can make a real difference in the struggling clinic.
