In a report from the American Cancer Society, new discoveries are being made in the fight against pancreatic cancer. With this type of cancer being so difficult to treat, it could lead to an individual needing Social Security disability benefits.
Over the past decade, the American Cancer Society has spent more than $60 million in over 150 studies to find ways to detect, prevent, and treat what can be a deadly form of cancer. Despite the research however, there is not, as of yet, screening tests that can detect pancreatic cancer before it takes hold of the body.
Since symptoms are rarely experienced with pancreatic cancer, by the time it is discovered, it has often spread to other organs in the body. Just 5% of patients live past 5 years after they have been diagnosed.
Now researchers have found that certain changes occur in the DNA when cancer cells are present. They hope to use this information, along with blood markers, to find ways to screen for pancreatic cancer so it can be caught earlier.
