New Drug May Treat Those With Multiple Sclerosis

Many individuals who suffer from multiple sclerosis are eligible for Social Security disability benefits. If your condition prohibits you from working any job, has lasted 1 year or more, or is expected to continue for the rest of your life, you may qualify for monthly benefits.

If you suffer from multiple sclerosis, you might experience trouble with walking at a "normal" gait. According to WBAY, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved a new drug, Ampyra, that could help those affected by multiple sclerosis to regain some normal muscle activity.

Multiple sclerosis is a neurological problem in which the brain does not communicate properly with the body, affecting physical activities such as walking, or any other muscle movement.

FDA officials have warned that Ampyra will not work for all patients. Additionally, it has not yet been tested on those who have entirely lost the ability to walk, and it is quite cost-prohibitive at about $1,000 per month. This price tag might mean it is out-of-the question for those who suffer from multiple sclerosis and are unable to work because of the condition.

If you or your loved one are suffering from a severe physical or mental disability, you should contact a Social Security Disability lawyer immediately to learn about your rights and determine eligibility. The process of securing Social Security Disability Insurance benefits and/or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) can be difficult and overwhelming. Don't go it alone!
