The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) estimates approximately 11-20% of soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This is compared to 7% of the general population.
It isn't surprising to hear of rising rates of alcohol and drug abuse among the ranks of returning veterans with PTSD. Given the range of problems and emotions facing today's veterans, Chicago's Adler School of Professional Psychology is launching a doctoral program available to those students with a desire to help soldiers, veterans, and their families.
This fall, will be the first class in Adler's military psychology program, and it will be the first such program in the nation. The program's curriculum was designed by retired and active duty military. The 5-year program includes all courses for a doctorate in clinical psychology. Available electives will focus on those psychological issues facing many veterans, such as PTSD, traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), and crisis counseling.
