New Guidelines for Patients at Risk of Stroke

If a cardiovascular disease or any other severe medical condition has led to you becoming permanently disabled, you may qualify to receive Social Security disability benefits. These benefits can be used to offset your lost wages.

According to a report from the Doctor's Lounge, the American Stroke Association and the American Heart Association have issued new guidelines on the care of patients with clogged neck arteries.

Routine ultrasound tests that detect clogged arteries in the neck are not recommended unless the patient is at a high risk of suffering a stroke.
This is due to insufficient evidence that routine ultrasound tests are beneficial.

A patient that may be considered high risk for suffering a stroke is one who has a family history of it or has high cholesterol.

The new guidelines also indicate that carotid stenting, which is the placement of a mesh tube inside the clogged artery to open it, and carotid endarterectomy, which is surgically scraping away the plaque, are effective ways to treat arteries that are more than 50% clogged in the neck.

The new guidelines also suggest that medication may be a better option for patients with clogged neck arteries, as opposed to stenting or endarterectomy.
