New Housing For Homeless Veterans Planned

April 6, 2010 - Homelessness has been a constant struggle for veterans returning from wars. Veterans returning from the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, however, have homeless rates higher than any other returning group of veterans. Reasons for homelessness vary as much as the individuals themselves that are homeless.

The Roseberg Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Douglas County, Oregon will be the site of a new housing complex intended to help veterans who are currently homeless and veterans in danger of becoming homeless. The facility is full-service and contains 52 housing units. The complex came with an $8 million price tag and is only one of 22 in the U.S. with attached VA facilities; it is the only such facility on the West Coast.

Almost half of the estimated 154,000 homeless veterans are plagued by mental health issues. Approximately 70% of homeless veterans are addicted to alcohol or drugs. The facility will provide two case managers to aid veterans in finding the specific VA services they need. Veterans accepted into the facility will be given access to VA services such as:

  • Substance abuse counseling; and
  • Mental health treatment programs.

The day-to-day facility operations will be undertaken by United Community Action Network (UCAN), a group known for helping their clients with issues similar to the ones these homeless veterans are facing. In order to live in the facility, veterans must submit up to 30% of their income. UCAN works to secure both state and federal grants to help those veterans unable to pay.

Construction is not planned to start for at least another year, but at least the initiative to help homeless veterans is underway. The more attention is drawn to the amount of homeless veterans, the better the chances these veterans have of getting help.
