A recent article on CNN detailed a new jobs bill offered by the Senate Democrats that may turn the tides on the battle of veterans unemployment and help all veterans, including veterans with disabilities, find work upon separating from their military service.
The plan called for tax incentives to be offered to businesses who hire veterans. At the same time, it seeks to provide job training for every soldier entering back into the civilian world. This proposal would prevent veterans from being the last on the unemployment line.
An attachment that was not acknowledged in the jobs bill was the "millionaire's surtax," which seeks to increase the amount of taxes paid by those people earning over $1 million per year.
To fund the ideas contained in the proposal, Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) stated the money would come from "existing pay-fors," which are "revenue streams" currently used to subsidize projects and issues dealing with veterans.
Businesses would be offered up to $2,400 in tax credits in order to hire veterans that haven't been employed for over 4 weeks. For those out of work for more than 6 months, that incentive jumps to $5,600, and $9,600 for hiring veterans with service-related disabilities.
Mandatory job skills training is also part of the bill. Currently unknown is the cost this bill will run up.
